The 22-year-old talent from Strib, Ellen Hjøllund Klinge, has excelled under the Danish flag at the World Championships in Glasgow.
Together with Amalie Dideriksen, Ellen finished 9th in Madison at the Senior World Championships in track cycling. Ellen is the defending Danish champion in Madison and Omnium on the track, and last year she became part of the Danish elite national team on the track, where she has been a reserve for the two established pairs riders, Amalie Dideriksen and Julie Leth. As Julie did not have the opportunity to participate in the World Championships this year, Ellen was therefore competing resulting in 9th place for the two riders.
The road to the World Cup
Ellen started cycling in the fall of 2017, where she quickly became part of the Junior National Road Team. From there, she moved up to the elite national team and experienced how the competition really came to a head. Her focus has therefore been on continuous development securing her a place on the Danish elite national track team last year. Circumstances since then have contributed to Ellen becoming a regular part of the Olympic qualification in Madison, which she makes no secret of is her ultimate dream – to compete in the Olympics in Madison. Just ahead, however, are the European Road Championships in September and the European Track Championships in January 2024, which, like the World Championships back in August, are part of the Olympic qualification.
Sponsorships make the difference
The high ambitions and impressive results on both road and track don’t come by themselves. Ellen has worked hard to get here and in early 2023 she made the decision to focus all her time on cycling.
She is mainly staying in Belgium at the moment where she has signed a contract with a Belgian road team, Carbonbike Giordana by Gen z, giving her the opportunity to participate in a lot of races.
However, such a contract is not yet professional which means that Ellen covers all expenses herself with the exception of the national team races. She is therefore dependent on sponsorships, among other things, to make ends meet.
